He was a Club member at a Boys & Girls Club when he was growing up in California.

TEXANS FIT ANNOUNCES NEW LOCATION IN MEYERLAND

Houston Rockets Owner Pledges $4 Million for Harvey Relief

The owner of the Houston Rockets, Leslie Alexander, will contribute $4 million to help victims of Hurricane Harvey. "Our hearts are heavy seeing the devastation that so many of our friends, family and neighbors are experiencing," the Rockets said in a statement.

Hou Lit Awards, Honorees and Winners in Literary Arts

Over the weekend, the winner of the 2019 Readers’ Choice Award was announced at the inaugural Houston Literary Awards Gala. The contest began in August with a field of over 200 nominated local authors. The top five who garnered the most votes proceeded to the final round in September. Amoako Boafa: Soul of Black Folks

Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH) is excited to announce Amoako Boafo: Soul of Black Folks, the debut museum solo exhibition for Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo (b. 1984), one of the most influential artistic voices of his generation. Working primarily in figuration, Boafo is known for his vibrant use of color and thick improvisational gestures, created by his finger-painting technique emphasizing the contours and luminous skin tone of the body of his subjects. The show presents over thirty works created between 2016–2022, including a site-specific wall painting made specifically for CAMH. The subjects featured in Boafo’s paintings represent the nuance and complexities of Black life globally.

Hurricane Harvey Grant Provides Financial Relief for Business Owners

Local Houston organization Dreampreneur, Inc. provides grants to eligible business owners negatively affected by the storm

The catastrophic rainfall from Hurricane Harvey set a record in the continental United States dropping nearly 30 trillion gallons of water on the fourth largest city in the nation over a six-day period. Chuck Watson, who studies the economic impact of natural disasters for scientific research company Enki Holdings, estimates the cost to the economy from the flooding to be $30 billion. Numerous companies shut down in Harvey's wake, creating a grinding halt in one of the nation’s top five largest economies.

AARP Texas Survey: Voters 50+ to Decide Houston’s Next Mayor

A new survey commissioned by AARP Texas revealed that 84% of registered voters who are 50-plus will “very likely” vote in the 2023 Houston Mayoral election. The survey also revealed that 89% of those polled want Houston’s next top city leader to address crime and safety, calling those issues “top priorities” for this powerful voting bloc. Another 75% said jobs and the economy are essential to them. These issues will likely influence voting behavior at the polls in city elections this coming November.

Deadline Extended for Public Input on Changes to Chapter 19

City Council Member Dave Martin appreciates the comments received by many District E residents, and is happy to announce that Mayor Sylvester Turner has changed the deadline for public input on changes to City of Houston Chapter 19 to Monday, March 5 at 5:00 p.m. After the proposed changes were presented to Council during a Joint Transportation, Technology, and Infrastructure/Regulation and Neighborhood Affairs Committee Meeting last Monday, February, 12, Council Member Martin provided strong feedback to Mayor Turner, demanding residents be given more time to participate in the process.
