The Year of the Minority Woman
In this era where women are more self-assured, self-aware, and self-loving has resulted in women claiming their place in history. The script of women not having their voice heard has been rewritten with women leading the conversation instead of taking notes from it. Being a part of the discussion has allowed women to change the dialogue, change the world’s view of gender and change the space in which women find themselves. 2019 was a great year for the advancement of women in various areas. The Levy Park Conservancy (LPC) presents Healthy Bites to Save Lives, a festival headlined by award-winning chef, author and lifestyle crusader Rocco DiSpirito and featuring Houston-area celebrities, chefs and experts to “Celebrate All that is Houston” on Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. The public is invited to this free event at Levy Park, 3801 Eastside St., which is sponsored by Dr. Mehmet Oz’s HealthCorps.org and will raise funds to assist students in Texas who have been impacted by Hurricane Harvey.
Local Barbers Clean Up Southeast Houston Homeless
A gym owner and two barbers have teamed up to give the homeless in their southeast Houston community new looks. Luis Torres, owner of Powerhouse Houston, collects clothing donations from gym members. Two haircutting cousins, Abraham Orozco and Mario Tapia, were inspired to join in the effort.
