During the 85th legislative session, I worked on many issues impacting not only District 147, but all Texans. Below are highlights of my achievements this session and what I look forward to working on during the interim.

UPDATE: Suspect Charged in Fatal Shooting at 13203 Robinglen Drive

Charges have been filed against a suspect in the fatal shooting of a man at 13203 Robinglen Drive about 7:30 a.m. on March 30. The suspect, Quinn Henderson (b/m, 29), is charged with murder in the 232nd State District Court. He is accused in the killing of his son-in-law, Hollingsworth Green, 32, of the above address, who was pronounced deceased at West Houston Medical Center.

Senator Borris L. Miles Statement on Dioxin Found in Kashmere Gardens and Fifth Ward

"The City of Houston Health Department's finding of dioxin, a persistent, cancer-causing chemical in Kashmere Gardens, on top of the Texas Department of State Health Services' 2019 finding of a confirmed cancer cluster surrounding the Union Pacific (UP) creosote site, is alarming. This discovery is further proof that the UP permit application submitted to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) requires additional scrutiny. The current plan does not go far enough to clean up the cancer-causing chemicals that have permeated the ground and water and negatively impacted these communities for decades.

Mental Health Is a Problem for All Not Just Some

Being imbalanced is a problem that everyone has had to deal with at some point in their life more than once and will have to deal with it again. Life is stressful and can cause anyone anxiety. Mental health surveys indicate that 60% of the American population has experienced significant levels of mental and/or emotional unwellness since the onset of the global pandemic. A 2020 Kaiser family study indicated that Texans have had an increase in their levels of anxiety and depression from an average of 37.7% before the pandemic to 40.1% during the pandemic. Difficulties are with individuals owning this as their reality as a threat to their mental health can be an even bigger problem than dealing with stress and anxiety itself.

Houston Used Car Prices Have Dropped 4.69% During the Pandemic

The uncertainty precipitated by COVID-19 has affected every sector of the economy, including the automotive industry. Car dealerships are experiencing sharp declines in used car sales, as much of the country still remains under lockdown. While used car sales have always been prone to fluctuations, data from the U.S. Census Bureau found that retail used car sales plummeted more than 20 percent year-over-year in March even before the full effects of stay-at-home orders were realized. The last time that used car sales fell so precipitously was at the onset of the Great Recession in 2008.

There is no doubt that the Health Disparities, Education, Awareness, Research & Training Consortium (HDEART-C), the Intercultural Cancer Council (ICC) and its Network has had an impact on the career trajectory of a significant number individuals in health, especially health inequities. The issue is whether we can document its impact. Will those who have benefited take the time to respond to do the survey? That is the biggest question?
