Mental Health Is a Problem for All Not Just Some

Being imbalanced is a problem that everyone has had to deal with at some point in their life more than once and will have to deal with it again. Life is stressful and can cause anyone anxiety. Mental health surveys indicate that 60% of the American population has experienced significant levels of mental and/or emotional unwellness since the onset of the global pandemic. A 2020 Kaiser family study indicated that Texans have had an increase in their levels of anxiety and depression from an average of 37.7% before the pandemic to 40.1% during the pandemic. Difficulties are with individuals owning this as their reality as a threat to their mental health can be an even bigger problem than dealing with stress and anxiety itself.

The White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities announces its ninth cohort of HBCU Scholars, recognizing 102 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students from 29 different states and countries for their accomplishments in academics, leadership, civic engagement and much more. The 2023 HBCU scholars are the largest cohort since the inception of this recognition program in 2014 and represent a record number of institutions, with the HBCU participation rate now over 70 percent.

The City of Houston is currently awaiting the final word from the 85th Texas Legislature on key pension legislation. The passage of Senate Bill 2190 and House Bill 43 are critical to the City of Houston's Fiscal Year 2018 Budget. The passage of these two pieces of legislation allows the City of Houston to avoid a $240 million budget shortfall that would lead to layoffs for city employees. I am dedicated to making sure the City of Houston's budget is balanced, services are not cut, and I will fight for District E residents.
