Flu season hits Houston area earlier than usual

More than 3 percent of reported doctors visits in Harris County during the first week of November were related to the flu or other respiratory viral infections, compared to 1.7 percent in early October, according to the Houston Health Department.

City of Houston Files Suit Against the State of Texas' "Death Star" Super Preemption Law

Today, the City of Houston filed a lawsuit in Travis County against the State of Texas to have declared unconstitutional, void, and unenforceable House Bill 2127, the so-called "Death Star" or "Super" preemption bill. Governor Greg Abbott signed Texas House Bill 2127 on June 14, 2023, with an effective date of September 1, 2023.

Mayor Turner Alarm By State to Takeover HISD

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner ran late on Wednesday morning, March 1, 2022, for the Houston City Council. Over the weekend, he met with several people, including legislators and Commissioner of Education Mike Morath, to discuss the future of the Houston Independent School District (HISD). The commissioner did not give him a definitive answer. However, the legislators did inform him of the state's intention to takeover HISD. According to Turner, Texas Education Agency (TEA) has intentions of replacing the Board of Education, Superintendent Millard House, and taking over the entire school district.
