Harris County Reports Record-Breaking Early Voting Numbers During First Week
Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth reports that voters have cast more than 54.4K in-person ballots during the first four days of Early Voting for the November 7 Joint General & Special Elections. More people are choosing to vote early compared to the most similar election in 2015, when only 36.3K voted in person during the same time.

Simon Thew is named Houston Ballet’s new Music Director
Houston Ballet has appointed current Associate Conductor Simon Thew as the company’s next Music Director and Chief Conductor, effective July 1, 2024. He will succeed longtime Music Director Ermanno Florio, who is stepping down at the end of the 2023-2024 season after 32 years in the role.

The number of Texans who didn’t have enough to eat over a one-week period increased by 60 percent - from 1,657,518 to 2,667,937 - between August 2021 and August 2023, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau Household Pulse Survey analyzed by Hunger Free America. Previously, in 2021, food hardship in Texas declined, likely because of a large influx of federal food and cash aid.

Two employees of a national tank cleaning company suffered injuries when exposed to hydrogen sulfide – a flammable, highly toxic colorless gas – that was present during the cleaning process of a tanker truck on April 25, 2023, in Beaumont. Two municipal firefighters responding to the scene also suffered injuries from the gas.
