Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a Senior Member of the House Homeland Security Committee and the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations released the following statement about American’s use of the MOAB against a suspected ISIS installation in Afghanistan:
“The use of the MOAB, America’s most powerful non-nuclear munition, against suspected ISIS fighters in Afghanistan represents a very significant acceleration of our military engagement in the on-going conflict between Afghan forces and those allied with the Islamic State. The fight against ISIL is crucial and this raised the ante. But any actions taken by the United States must serve our vital national interest and a defined foreign policy.
“ISIL should be defeated but doing so requires more than just dropping the ‘mother of all bombs.’ The Trump Administration needs to define its goals for American security and predicate its actions based on imminent threats and a defined foreign policy. We have to be concerned about the impact on the American people and on our military. And the United States cannot go it alone and cannot bomb alone. The president needs to respond to Congress’s concerns and Congress should immediately debate an AUMF.”
