HOUSTON - Crews broke ground on a new air traffic control tower at Ellington Airport on Monday.

The project is expected to cost $12.4 million and will have new technology to better service the airport and provide mission control support for Houston Spaceport.

Mario C. Diaz, Houston Aviation Director, said the new tower would help the airport compete in the 21st century.

“This is an important step forward for Ellington Airport, and a critical project to ensure the vital aviation operations based there can be carried out safely and efficiently,” said Diaz.

The new tower will replace the existing one that was built in 1955 and had structural damage during Hurricane Ike.

It will be equipped with new radios for better communication with planes, an automated weather observation system and an updated lighting-control system.

The tower will be twice the size of the existing one. It will stand adjacent to the current tower, which will remain in use until crews complete construction.
