An educational program is training adults with autism for a future in the tech industry.

What looks like a swanky computer lab is so much more for the young men and women who are coding, building and designing.

"Digital technology, interactive technology, videography, art, coding, 2D modeling and 3D modeling,” said Kimberly Charlet. “Everything that's involved with making a videogame.”

Charlet is the Vice President of Operations for Nonpareil. The nonprofit organization offers a post-secondary educational program.

The program builds on an individual’s interest in technology while furthering their social and vocational skills.

Charlet said 90 percent of adults on the Autism Spectrum are either unemployed or underemployed.

“Jobs can be very, very difficult,” said Charlet. “We have several crew members who have college degrees, master’s degrees and they can't get a job at Walmart because of the interview process.”

She believes the program provides them with a way to not only be their best, but to be a contributor to society and to the program.

“They see a future together, they want to work together, and they want to be successful together,” said Charlet.

April is Autism Awareness Month.
