HOUSTON - A Houston woman arrested in China during a business trip two years ago was sentenced to prison on spying charges, but she may soon be deported to the U.S.

Sandy Phan-Gillis was part of a trade delegation with Houston city leaders but stopped at a border checkpoint where she was accused of stealing state secrets 20 years before.

The New York Times reports a secret trial was held. The judge declared her guilty and ordered her to be expelled.

A human rights activist in China is crediting Secretary of State Rex Tillerson who raised the issue during his visit to Beijing last month.
