CYPRESS - Its a national honor for the state champs.

The Cypress Falls High School boys' basketball team has finished No. 17 nationally for the 2016-17 season, MaxPreps, the online high school sports and CBSSports.com site, announced Tuesday.

Cy Falls also received a trophy from MaxPreps during a special ceremony Tuesday as part of the MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard.

"It's a tremendous honor. This is one of those things where numbers don't lie. This is exciting for the school and the community and speaks to the efforts that the guys did to achieve this," said Cy Falls head basketball coach Richard Flores, who completed his third season, in a statement released by MaxPreps.

Cy Falls (35-3), which set a school record for wins, defeated Wagner of San Antonio, 63-57, on March 11 to capture the Texas 6A state championship, the school's first since fielding a varsity basketball team for the 1993-94 season.

MaxPreps Computer Rankings are used to determine team rank for the Tour of Champions. The system utilizes the huge number of game results stored in the MaxPreps database. Generally, the more a team wins the higher the ranking, but the system takes into account quality wins (against other highly ranked opponents), margin of victory, and strength of schedule. Playoff games are weighted 2.1 times a regular season game.

"Congratulations to the Cypress Falls Eagles players, coaches and fans for an amazing year and for earning the Army National Guard's national rankings trophy."
