Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a member of the House Budget Committee and senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security and Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations,

issued the following statement about reports the Special Counsel has impaneled a Grand Jury in the District of Colombia in furtherance of his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. Presidential elections:

“According to published reports, Special Counsel Robert Mueller has empaneled a grand jury in the District of Colombia in furtherance of his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. Presidential elections. If the reports are true, Special Counsel Mueller is acting in accordance with his responsibilities to uphold the rule of law.

“Similarly, the Congress has a role to play in getting to the truth, protecting our electoral process and safeguarding the Constitution. Accordingly, it is incumbent upon the House Judiciary Committee to act in furtherance of its oversight responsibilities and investigate to determine the facts. The American people deserve answers and the House Judiciary Committee can no longer remain silent.

“Further, Special Counsel Mueller is doing his job and should not be impeded in his investigation. That is why I introduced H.Res.474, a resolution which strongly condemns any action by the President to terminate his appointment or scuttle the investigating into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election or abuse the Pardon Power.”
