Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security and Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, released the following statement regarding Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz’ suggestion that African American jurors in the District of Columbia were incapable of being fair arbiters, as it relates to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s interference and potential collusion with Trump campaign officials in the 2016 presidential election:

“Recently, Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz made the outrageous claim that African Americans in the District of Columbia were incapable of unbiased decision making as grand jurors in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. Dershowitz told a radio talk show host that Washington, D.C. “has a racial and ethnic composition that might be very unfavorable to the Trump Administration.”

“I am highly offended and disturbed by Professor Dershowitz’ assertions and firmly believe that racism has no place in our nation’s judicial system. Rather than challenging the impartiality of African American jurors, Mr. Dershowitz should instead champion criminal justice reform, a system that has far too often negatively impacted African American men.”
