Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security and Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, released the following statement over the passing of Texas Governor Mark White, who served as Governor from 1983 to 1987:
“Mark White will be known as one of the greatest governors the State of Texas has ever had. He acknowledged the value of diversity before the word and its meaning were fully embraced. During his time as Governor, he championed education reform and expanded economic opportunities.
“White and his wife Linda embraced the governorship as a chance to do right by the people of Texas and they so often rose to that occasion. Born in Henderson in March of 1940, White would go on to graduate from Lamar High School and serve as Texas’ 43rd Governor.
“I am deeply saddened and heartbroken over the passing of my dear friend, and offer my most sincere prayers and condolences to his wife and the rest of their family. Governor White was beloved by all and will be sadly missed.”
