Houston, TX – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security and Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, issued the following statement about the President’s Afghanistan speech:

“Tonight in yet another stunning reversal, the President announced his intentions to place thousands of additional brave Americans in harm’s way in the war in Afghanistan. Trump’s announcement stands in sharp contrast to statements he made in the 2016 presidential campaign, when he called for the United States military to fully withdraw from the long-standing conflict.

“The President’s Afghanistan strategy remains woefully short on details and leaves many critical questions yet unanswered. It is imperative that the President not commit any additional troops without Congress thoroughly debating this plan and issuing a new Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF).

“After nearly 16 years of bloodshed, the American people and the heroes who defend this nation deserve to be told more about the evolving strategy and the effort to bring this conflict to a successful conclusion.”
