Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security and Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, released the following statement about General Michael Flynn’s guilty plea for lying to the FBI:

“The guilty plea of President Trump’s first National Security Advisor for lying to federal investigators about contacts with Russians during the presidential transition marks a deeply troubling moment in American history. General Michael Flynn dishonored his office and betrayed the American people while serving at the highest echelons of Government.

“Flynn’s admission is the latest clarion indicator of collusion between Trump campaign officials and Russian agents during the 2016 federal elections and raises serious questions which must be answered. Trump should not be so cavalier and dismissive of the charges against Flynn, who he appointed to one of the most sensitive positions in the government despite warnings not to do so from President Barack Obama, and retained him in that post even after being notified by Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates that Flynn was compromised and subject to blackmail.

“The statement released by General Flynn indicates that he is cooperating with Special Counsel Mueller. This saga is far from over. The American people must know the truth, and if the process of impeachment proceeds to the House Judiciary Committee, we will do our duty under the Constitution.”
