Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security, issued the following statement surrounding the Senate’s confirmation of Betsy Devos to become our nation’s new Secretary of Education:
“I am disappointed that the Senate has voted to confirm Betsy Devos to lead the Department of Education which is crucial to forming the foundation of our Nation’s children. Devos lacks the most basic qualifications required to serve as Secretary and has a history of making statements and promoting ideas that would undermine the public school system.
“Our covenant as elected leaders is to ensure that all children have access to the quality books, computers and teachers committed to helping them learn and grow. This is why I’m committed to leading the charge against the destructive policies proffered by the new Education Secretary. At this crucial hour, we cannot afford to fail our children. I have spent time in too many classrooms and fought too hard for too long than to allow that to happen.”
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee is a Democrat from Texas’s 18th Congressional District. She is a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security and is a Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations.
