The U.S. Treasury Department named Venezuela’s VP Tareck El Aissami as a drug trafficker, claiming he has played a “significant role in narcotics trafficking” and imposing sanctions prohibiting anyone in the U.S. from doing business with him and freezing any U.S. assets. In addition to the drug trafficking charges, which link El Aissami to the Zetas cartel in Mexico and protecting a Colombian drug kingpin, El Aissami is also named in an ongoing investigation linking him to the issue of almost 200 Venezuelan passports and IDs to people from the Middle East.
