Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'” To honor King’s life and work and in recognition of MLK Day, Houston Food Bank is welcoming individual and corporate volunteers on Monday, January 16, 2017 MLK Day.

More than 200 volunteers from Shell Oil Company will work on MLK Day, doing various projects from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more than 20 years, Shell has sponsored MLK National Day of Service activities across the nation.

Beginning at 12:00 pm, Travis Torrence, Vice President – Legal of Jiffy Lube International, Inc. (a wholly owned, indirect subsidiary of Shell Oil Company) will provide remarks along with Ric Campo, Chairman of the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee and Chairman of the Board and CEO of Camden Property Trust.

Shell is a Founding Sponsor of the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee, and have invited TD, the official mascot of the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee to mingle with participants.

Shell will also be joined at the Food Bank by volunteers from Johnson Controls, Cargill, Alpha Kappa Omega and Xi Alpha Omega of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the Houston Astros. See volunteer schedule below.

Activities include creating Backpack Buddy sacks in the Repack Room and sorting product in the Carousel Room. Shell is the bronze sponsor of the Backpack Buddy program. Many children who rely on free or reduced-priced lunches during the school year go home to meager or no meals on weekends. The Houston Food Bank’s Backpack Buddy program works to fill that gap. On Fridays, at participating schools and other locations, children take home child-friendly, nonperishable, easily consumed and vitamin-fortified food. The food is given to the children discreetly, to avoid inviting unwanted attention.
