The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, has organized a lineup of family activities, tours, and more, for the exhibition Paint the Revolution: Mexican Modernism, 1910–1950, on view now through Sunday, October 1, 2017. Mexican Modernism features some 175 works charting the development of Modern art in Mexico and the social, political, and cultural forces that shaped it over the course of nearly half a century. Paint the Revolution: Mexican Modernism, 1910–1950 charts the development of modern art in Mexico and the social, political, and cultural forces that shaped it over the course of nearly half a century. Featuring some 175 works—including prints, photographs, books, newspapers, easel paintings, large-scale portable murals, and mural fragments—Paint the Revolution is unprecedented for its breadth and variety.

The most comprehensive exhibition of modern Mexican art displayed in the United States in more than seven decades, Paint the Revolution presents masterpieces by well-known figures such as Frida Kahlo, José Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Rufino Tamayo. Also on display are works by many of their important contemporaries, including Manuel and Lola Álvarez Bravo, Miguel Covarrubias, Alfredo Ramos Martínez, Carlos Mérida, Roberto Montenegro, and Dr. Atl (Gerardo Murillo). Three historical murals by los tres grandes (“the three great ones”)—Orozco, Rivera, and Siqueiros—are digitally re-created and projected in the galleries. The exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to see the emergence of Mexico as a center of modern art.

Summer Art Explorers: Look, Discover, Create!

Thursday, July 20, 2017: 11 a.m.–2 p.m.

From ceramics and fiber to paint and metalwork, families are invited to experiment and create with materials found in works throughout the Museum this summer! Embark on artistic adventures with games, toys, and storybooks in the galleries. Drop by the sketch cart to sharpen observation skills and try your hand at the different techniques artists use to create drawings. In the studio, try out a different material each week and test your creativity inspired by what you discovered in the galleries. Recommended for ages 3–12.

Homelands and Histories: Photographs by Fazal Sheikh

Thursday, July 20, 2017: 2 p.m.–2:45 p.m.

Photographer Fazal Sheikh has traveled the world, capturing images of the displaced and marginalized in Afghanistan, Africa, Brazil, Cuba, India, Israel, Pakistan, and Palestine. In Sheikh’s own words, his aim is to “contribute to a wider understanding of these groups, to respect them as individuals, and to counter the ignorance and prejudice that often attaches to them,” a goal achieved through his simple, direct portraits.

Homelands and Histories: Photographs by Fazal Sheikh celebrates a major MFAH acquisition of 75 photographs spanning the artist’s career. This 45-minute tour explores the exhibition and encourages visitors to discuss the artwork together.

Happy Hour Thursdays
