Facts indicate that Texas is currently the most dangerous place in the United States for women to give birth. Rep. Shawn Thierry is committed to fixing this endemic. She has already authored HB 2403 that would have investigated the causes of why African American women in Texas are dying at three times the rate of other women during or shortly after childbirth but was not voted on due to Republican influence. In order for this issue to pass, Rep. Thierry is calling on the community to help by engaging elected officials to push for its passage during this next legislative session. Under Thierry’s bill, HB51, the state’s Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Task Force would study health-related factors for Black mothers, including heart disease, eclampsia, high blood pressure, obesity and other conditions. The task force’s research will also extend until 2023 and would look at how socioeconomic status affects Black mothers.
