HOUSTON, TX - Major League Baseball announced this afternoon that a pair of Houston Astros players have earned American League monthly awards for May. IF Carlos Correa has been named Player of the Month, while RHP Lance McCullers Jr. has been named Pitcher of the Month.

During the month of May, Correa batted .386 (39x101) with eight doubles, seven homers, 26 RBI and a 1.130 OPS (.368 OBP/.673 SLG) in 26 games. Correa led the AL in batting average and RBI, while ranking third in on-base percentage, fifth in hits and OPS and tied for sixth in slugging in May. He had multiple hits in 14 of his 26 games, including five consecutive games from May 25-29, which was the longest such streak of his career.

McCullers compiled a 4-0 record in six starts during the month. He owned a 0.99 ERA (4ER/36.1IP) with 37 strikeouts and allowed only 21 hits for a .164 opponent batting average. McCullers led AL pitchers in ERA, ranked tied for second in wins, third in opponent batting average and tied for fifth in strikeouts. He pitched 22.0 scoreless innings from May 6-23, which was the longest scoreless inning streak by an Astros pitcher since Roy Oswalt posted a 32.0-inning streak from Aug. 27-Sept. 11, 2008. Additionally, McCullers did not allow an earned run in four consecutive starts from May 6-23. The last Astros pitcher to go at least four games with no earned runs and at least 5.0 innings pitched was Nolan Ryan in 1984.

This marks the first time in franchise history that the Astros have had Player and Pitcher of the Month awards during the same month. The last time it happened with an AL team was when David Ortiz won the Player of the Month Award and Jon Lester won the Pitcher of the Month Award for the Boston Red Sox in May 2010.

These awards are both the first player and pitcher of the month awards for Correa and McCullers. The last time an Astros player was named Player of the Month was Jose Altuve in June of 2016, while Dallas Keuchel was named AL Pitcher of the Month for April 2017.

Along with McCullers, an Astros pitcher has now won the May Pitcher of the Month Award five times (Joe Niekro- 1979, Nolan Ryan- 1984, Doug Drabek- 1994 and Dallas Keuchel- 2015). And with Correa, an Astros player has won the May Player of the Month Award eight times (Bob Watson- 1972 & 1975, Art Howe- 1981, Jeff Bagwell- 1993 & 1996 and Lance Berkman- 2004 & 2008).
