Health Care Rally
I am always impressed with the many Texans who take time to come up to their Capitol and rally for what they believe in. This week, I joined the hundreds that gathered on the south steps to rally for the protection of health care. Moreover, the Cover Texas Now coalition fights for quality affordable health coverage and a sustainable health care system. Similarly, I recently filed HCR 54 to urge Congress to keep Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Texas should not have the largest number (4.6 million) and percentage (17.1) of uninsured residents in the country. I look forward to supporting any legislation that helps remedy these numbers and move Texas into the direction dependable healthcare.
Fort Bend County Day at the Texas Capitol
I was honored to pass HR 450 recognizing March 8th as Fort Bend County Day at the Capitol. I'm proud to serve as State Rep. for #HD27 and represent one of the most diverse and fastest growing counties in America! Fort Bend County is the VERY best place to live, work and play!
In addition, I had the pleasure of meeting with newly elected Commissioner Vincent Morales.
Further, I gratefully served as a panelist on a legislative panel during lunch. These rewarding events have been inspiring and I look forward to continue fighting for Fort Bend County this legislative session.
Pearland Environmental Task Force
I was in great company as I met with members of the Pearland Environmental Task Force in the Capitol office. They were able to bring me their comments and concerns regarding ongoing environmental impacts in the district.
Missouri City, Texas Visitors
Special thanks to the members of the Missouri City executive team and staff that visited the Capitol office earlier this week to discuss the 2017 legislative agenda. Undoubtedly, I am in full support of all legislation that promotes the advancement of Missouri City.
Environmental Regulations Committee
We had our first Environmental Regulation Committee organizational meeting on Tuesday, March 7th. I'm proudly the ranking member on the committee. We have oversight over the TCEQ which strives to protect our state's public health with clean air, water and land.
Happy Women's History Month
We are blessed to have so many strong women call Texas their home. Happy Women's History Month! I believe that women's rights are human rights! I will continue to stand and fight with our Texas women for equal pay for equal work and women's healthcare matters! That's why I'm proud to be a joint author of HB 228 with Rep. Senfronia Thompson (Equal Pay bill).
Bathroom Bill Opposition
The Senate State Affairs Committee met earlier in the week to hear testimony on SB 6 (or the "Bathroom Bill"). This legislation is particularly discriminatory against Texans of the LGBTQ community. Also, according to the Texas Association of Business, the Bathroom Bill will have a negative impact on the TX economy. Under Gov. Greg Abbott, the TX economy has fallen from 3rd to 21st in the nation. Our economy will take a $8.5 million hit and lose 185,000 jobs under the proposed Bathroom Bill. Texas is better than this bill and literally cannot afford to pass it. Special thanks to my constituents that were present at the Capitol to advocate against this bill. I stand in solidarity with you and all other Texans who deserve nondiscriminatory legislation.
Texas Medical Association
Thank you to the TMA medical doctors and students who passed by the Capitol office to discuss legislative issues. The Texas Medical Association (TMA) is the nation's largest medical society and aims to improve the health of all Texans. Doctors and students of the TMA, I look forward to supporting your legislative concerns just as you all support the health of Texans.
