A soiree with a purpose as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People are honored for their commitment and visionary tobacco control leadership efforts. In 2013, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. made history by becoming the FIRST African American organization to adopt a national resolution urging the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to act within its regulatory authority to ban menthol-flavored cigarettes and thereby providing leadership for other organizations. On July 19, 2016, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) adopted its own menthol resolution at its national conference in Cincinnati, OH. The resolution, which was ratified on October 15th by the NAACP National Board of Directors, calls upon its chapters to support local policy efforts to restrict the sale of menthol cigarettes and other flavored tobacco products such as little cigars, cigarillos, and the flavored juices used in electronic nicotine devices.
