Don't call Issa Rae an overnight success. True, the actress is poised for a big break through with the Sunday premiere of her HBO comedy "Insecure." But Rae has been in the game for more than a minute. She first found fame with her 2011 web series "The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl."

“Insecure” co-creator and star Issa Rae has landed her first big movie gig, The Wrap reports. Rae will star opposite Bill Hader in Jesse Andrews’ directorial debut “Empress of Serenity.”

Rae and Hader play passengers on a weeks-long “megacruise” — Hader’s character is trying to win back his ex-wife and mend his relationship with his widowed father on board with him, and Rae’s character will both help and hurt his ambitions.

The project is an original screenplay from Andrews, who wrote the novel “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.”

Stephen Chbosky will produce the film alongside Mr. Mudd’s Lianne Halfon and Russell Smith. Nathan Kahane and Joe Drake of Good Universe will executive produce with Mr. Mudd’s John Malkovich.

The project is scheduled for an August start.

In the meantime, the HBO star and her hit series “Insecure” will be returning on July 23. The series, which was created by Rae and Larry Wilmore, was renewed for a second season in last November. Like the first season, the upcoming series will feature a ten-episode run.
