AUSTIN, TX, MAY 4, 2017 - "Last week, a Dallas police officer fired deadly aim with his rifle into the back of a car that was retreating from a house party. Jordan Edwards was shot in the head as a result. Jordan's brother (who was driving the car) was handcuffed and detained on the curb as he watched his younger brother bleed to death. Following the incident, the shooting officer lied and successfully filed a fabricated police report. However, the truth of the matter was later revealed by the officer's body camera-- a practice that was mandated by the Texas legislature last session. This is another example of why Senator Royce West and I fought so hard to pass our body camera legislation.

This morning, my colleagues of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and I gathered for a press conference regarding the wicked murder of Jordan Edwards. The TLBC called for a thorough and just investigation into this homicide. Further, the TLBC urged the U.S. Attorney General, the Texas Governor, leaders of both legislative chambers, and other Texas leadership to stop kicking the can down the road and address this concern. Currently, there are numerous pieces of legislation pending that would seriously address these issues, but lack the support of our colleagues on the other side of the aisle. Legislation such as my special prosecutor bill (HB 854), or the Sandra Bland Act (HB 2702) which I am a proud co-author of, are examples of bills that beg the support of all members now more than ever. These bills will assist in the effort of eliminating the stigma that has been historically placed on black males.

As the father of a young black male, I am not only cautious, but afraid of the experiences he may face because of the color of skin. Senseless murders of our black men at the hands of law enforcement is becoming far too common. We must insist on not becoming numb these incidences. A start towards eradicating these issues would be to urge the support of the legislation that is already drafted yet, shamefully left pending without regard. I charge my constituents and Texans everywhere to call your Representatives and Senators and urge that they take a stand by supporting the reformative legislation.
