Contractors hired by the city of Houston were hard at work in Houston’s historic 4th Ward on Monday. They were supposed to be reinstalling the thousands of historic Freedmen’s Town bricks originally laid by slaves that construction crews mistakenly tore up in November. However, a preservation specialist for the Community Development Corporation for Freedmen’s Town said that the contract brought bricks from Kansas City instead of the ones taken from Freedmen’s Town. KPRC 2 contacted the city and less than 2 hours later the contractor was told to stop working. KPRC received word that the re-installment of the bricks was suspended to ensure all protocols were followed.
