Da Camera Jazz Series
Songs of Freedom: A Tribute to Abbey Lincoln, Joni Mitchell and Nina Simone
Featuring vocalists René Marie, Theo Bleckmann and Alicia Olatuja
Three adventurous vocalists of today present compelling visions of America in the 1960’s, paying tribute to three giants — Abbey Lincoln, Joni Mitchell and Nina Simone — with songs like Balm in Gilead, Both Sides Now, Everything Must Change, Freedom Day and Baltimore. These prolific artists championed freedom in the realms of civil rights, individuality, love and politics. Abbey Lincoln was a strong presence at Da Camera, appearing the first year the organization presented a stand-alone jazz series and making multiple return visits. Grammy Award-winning drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr. is music director of this ambitious tribute first presented at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
