WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security and Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, issued the following statement about significant progress towards reopening the D-SNAP program:
“Earlier this month just after the D-SNAP program in Houston ended, I immediately sent a letter urging the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture to work with me to give struggling Hurricane Harvey survivors more time to obtain the food assistance they so desperately need. I knew that with all the long lines at Disaster Recovery Centers throughout my district and elsewhere, people were suffering.
“Fortunately, the USDA was very accommodating and agreed to resume operations of the program for an additional three days. However, the Harris County took longer than I feel is reasonable in a disaster to identify the requisite sites.
“That is why I am pleased to announce that authorities are now setting up a site at Alexander Deussen Park, located at 12303 Sonia Road. We expect the location to be up and running as soon as possible. In the meantime, I will continue my work to secure more sites because people are hurting.
“Houston is still confronting disaster with businesses closed and people out of work. While we fight for funding in Washington, it is imperative that all branches of government collaborate to get people the help they need. That is what is happening now, but it should have been sooner.”
