Houston, TX – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Homeland Security and Judiciary, and Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations issued the following statement about the devastating earthquake near Mexico City.

“At this moment, our friends in Mexico are reeling from the effects of a catastrophic earthquake. Experts say it was centered off the northwest coast of Central America and sent violent tremors through much of Mexico City.

“Hundreds of structures have been severely damaged and at least 32 people have been killed, by what officials call the most powerful quake to strike the region in 100 years. To all of those whose lives have been impacted, I offer my deepest condolences and prayers. Mexico was one of the first countries to offer assistance after Hurricane Harvey struck. It is our turn to return the favor. That is what good neighbors do.”
