The 16-year-old Robertsdale High School student caught in the middle of an online firestorm over a racially insensitive sign at a pep rally on Friday is apologizing for her role in it. Her attorney, meanwhile, is attempting to provide more facts behind the circumstances about the sign. He also has said there has been "a lot of the criticism" directed at girl, which he calls "unfair" but is understandable given the heated national mood over immigration policy. Domingo Soto, a Mobile-based civil rights attorney who is Hispanic, said the girl comes from a family of Democrat Bernie Sanders supporters, and that Friday's pep rally has become a "teachable moment" for her on issues of white privilege and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy. Soto is the family's attorney. The girl, in her rationale for making the sign, said it wasn't meant to be racist, and that it was directed at Spanish Fort High School -- Robertsdale's opponent on Friday -- whose nickname is the "Toros."
