WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, senior Member of the House Committees on Budget, Judiciary and Homeland Security, and Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, released the following statement following the President’s tweets related to the DREAMERS and those eligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:
“The series of tweets unleashed by the president over the holiday weekend were shameful and offensive. Easter is a time for reflection on life’s blessings, like freedom, salvation and grace. For the president, it meant: (1) lying about the fact that he sabotaged Dreamers to appease his base; (2) ignoring that courts routinely reject his immigration policies; (3) blaming Democrats even though the GOP controls Congress; and, (4) swallowing Fox News talking points.
“We must protect the country’s 800,000 DREAMERS—124,000 of whom are Texans—and our young people who were eligible for the program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (“DACA”). We owe these young people a future and we owe them a solution. Dreamers are in this position through no fault of their own, and their hardship and suffering has been exacerbated by the President’s unilateral and reckless decision to rescind DACA. There is overwhelming bicameral, bipartisan support in Congress for a DACA fix.
“The time to find a solution for these young adults has long since passed. Congress must act now and the President must stop playing politics with the lives of these young DREAMERS. We need to get the job done”
