Equality Texas launched a campaign Wednesday to raise awareness of the violence against the LGBTQ community. In addition to the initiative, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said every police officer will go through new training to protect transgender Houstonians. “It is imperative that we not only appreciate our differences, but make it a priority to protect any person or group whose differences make them a target of violence,” said Acevedo. A new report by the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs showed Texas was the epicenter of an ‘"epidemic of violence" against the LGBTQ community, saying seven murders in Texas in 2017 and three of them were in Houston. The Montrose Center operates the only LGBTQ domestic violence shelter in Texas.
