Parents yelling. A mom dragged out. One arrest. HISD Board President clearing the room. Temperatures were high and passion raged at Houston ISD recent board meeting. The hot topic was the status of ten HISD schools that are low performing. So that the state won’t take control of them, the board is trying to come up with a solution to save the school. They were to vote on a proposal that put the schools control in the hands of a charter partner, Energized for STEM Academy. That decision does not sit well with parents or the community. During the meeting, parents, teachers and community leaders said they would organize walkouts, rallies, and even a teacher strike if the proposal passes. But HISD is on a tight timeline, as a decision has to be made by April 30.
