UKs Red Priest Opens Houston Early Music 50th Anniversary Season
Style Magazine Newswire | 8/22/2018, 11:25 a.m.
Houston Early Music opens its Golden Anniversary season on Tuesday, Nov. 6, with Red Priests The Baroque Bohemians: Gypsy Fever from Campfire to Court.
Recently a No. 1 CD on the UK Specialist Classical Charts, The Baroque Bohemians: Gypsy Fever from Campfire to Court presents a mix of baroque virtuosity and gypsy cunning, featuring originals gleaned from works by Biber, Telemann, Vivaldi, Handel, Byrd, Campra, Nicholson and Mieczewski.
The high-energy performance of Gypsy Fever from Campfire to Court invites audiences to discover and marvel over selections from the exotic 1730 Uhrovska Collection of Hungarian, Polish and Slovakian gypsy tunes. Moreover, the listener may well ask the question: "Is it possible some of these tunes might have inspired the works of our well known Baroque composers?"
The group, with members Piers Adams (recorder), Adam Summerhayes (violin), Angela East ('cello), and David Wright (harpsichord), takes its name from Vienna-born composer Antonio Vivaldi, The Red Priest Il Prete Rosso who, although an ordained priest, chose musical composition over the priesthood due to health issues.
Sponsored by the music department of Christ Church Cathedral, The Baroque Bohemians: Gypsy Fever from Campfire to Court will be presented on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Reynolds Hall at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Ave., 77002.
