Washington, D.C. – Latino Victory Fund and Our Revolution today jointly endorsed Jesús “Chuy” García in his bid to represent Illinois’ 4th Congressional District. A strong progressive who got his start working under Chicago Mayor Harold Washington, García has served the residents of Cook County for over three decades – as an alderman, state senator, community organizer, and currently as a county commissioner. If elected, he would replace immigrant champion Luis V. Gutiérrez, who announced his retirement in November after 25 years in the House of Representatives.

“Chuy García embodies the hardworking and resilient character of Chicago, and he won’t hesitate to stand up for working families in Washington,” said Cristóbal J. Alex, President of Latino Victory Fund. “As President Trump and congressional Republicans work diligently to dismantle the social safety net, scapegoat immigrants, and give handouts to the wealthiest individuals, we need progressive leaders like Chuy to fight back and do right by Americans.”

Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign.” said Our Revolution President Nina Turner. “Chuy’s decades of work fighting for immigrants, workers, and the disenfranchised are desperately needed in Congress. Our local groups in Illinois will be working hard to support his campaign and are excited for him join the wave of progressive leaders who will fight for Medicare for All, Education for All, immigration reform, and a criminal justice reform in Washington.”

As Cook County Commissioner, Jesús “Chuy” García worked to expand affordable housing, protect quality public education for all children, and promote smart community policing. He made Cook County safer by allowing police to focus their limited resources on stopping crime, not enforcing federal immigration laws.

In 2015, García challenged Mayor Rahm Emanuel and forced a runoff election, an unprecedented event in Chicago political history. Although he ultimately fell short, García’s candidacy energized Chicago progressives like no one since the late Mayor Washington.
