Washington, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security and Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, released the following statement on the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida:
“Today, we witnessed another horrific act of gun violence at a school. From current reports, we know that at least 17 persons were shot and killed in the tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School near Parkland, Florida. I extend my heartfelt condolences and sympathies to their families and loved ones. I pray for the complete and swift recovery of the many others who were wounded and that everyone affected has the love and support they need now and in the days and months ahead.
“I commend the first responders who acted quickly and courageously, and we extend our love to the people of Broward County who are now reeling from this senseless attack. The easy access of guns have contributed to the 40 mass shootings that have occurred to date this year in our nation, including 18 shootings at schools, places of education that should be a sanctuary where children can learn and prepare to lead productive and amazing lives. As Americans, we must unite behind them, lift them up, and to help them heal from this dreadful tragedy.”
