Dr. Avis obtained her Ph.D in Political Science (University of Maryland, College Park) and B.A in Political Science (Virginia State University) which helped shape her to serve as the youngest ever Executive Director of the National Council of Negro Women, a historic membership organization touching the lives of over four million women of African descent worldwide.

As a prolific writer, Dr. Avis is the author or co-author of numerous publications including, The State of Black Women in the US 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017; Beyond Broke: Why Closing the Racial Wealth Gap is a Priority for National Economic Security; and Massive Resistance: A Way Forward for Black America in the Wake of Trump. Her distinct perspectives have been shared on some of the world's most prestigious media platforms including CNN, NBC News, BET, FOX News, USA Today, the Washington Post, EBONY Magazine, Glamour Magazine, Essence Magazine and many more.
