UH Alumnus & Cliburn Medalist Returns for International Piano Festival
Kenny Broberg Will Perform Fri., Feb. 2 at Moores Opera House

HOUSTON, Jan. 30, 2018 – Kenny Broberg, a University of Houston alumnus and silver medalist at the 2017 Cliburn International Piano Competition, will return to his alma mater to perform at this year’s International Piano Festival, which runs Thursday-Sunday, Feb. 1- 4, at the Moores Opera House.
Over the summer, the 23-year-old made history as the first Moores School of Music graduate to place in the top three at the prestigious Cliburn. As a Cliburn medalist, Broberg in the middle of a recital tour, with UH as one of his stops around the world. He will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2.
Nancy Weems, chair of the Moores piano program, was Broberg’s instructor when he participated in the festival as a student just a few years ago. She is thrilled to see him on stage now as a guest artist.
“I was always keenly aware of Kenny’s incredible talent and his enormous potential,” Weems said. “He is an amazing young American artist with a truly unique musical voice and a brilliant career ahead of him.”
The festival, founded 35 years ago by world-renowned pianist Abbey Simon, a Distinguished Cullen Professor of Music, includes a series of recitals and master classes featuring some of the top performers in the world. Simon, who recently turned 98, will open the festival at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 1, with a recital, followed by a signing of his newly released biography, “Inner Voices.”
2018 International Piano Festival:
Recitals will be performed in the Moores Opera House and master classes will be held in Dudley Recital Hall at the Fine Arts Building.
