Houston, TX – Council Member Dwight Boykins is deeply troubled by recent acts of violence plaguing our nation’s schools, and believes that no parent should ever have to worry whether their child will make it home safely. It is with these concerns in mind that Council Member Boykins will embark on a ride-along with HPD’s South Central Patrol for a firsthand look at the added security measures in place on the last day of school.

Friday’s ride-along will focus on security at Yates High School, Worthing High School and Cullen Middle School. The measures being undertaken at these institutions are part of a city-wide effort to ensure the safety of our children called ‘Project Safe Start’, an initiative that began more than 20 years ago.

“We must act boldly to protect our children and reassure their parents of their children’s safety,” said Council Member Boykins. “Kids should never have to fear for their lives while obtaining an education, and it is our responsibility as adults to do all that we can to keep them from harm.”

The schools being visited are in the neighborhood where Council Member Boykins grew up. He graduated from what was then Cullen Junior High School, and is committed to ensuring that those who come behind him enjoy the same opportunities of success that he once did.

“We owe that to the children and we owe it to their parents,” added Council Member Boykins.
