STATEMENT: NHMC's Alex Nogales on Inhumane Treatment of Children in Mass Detention Centers

Reuters reports that between April 19 and May 31, the Department of Homeland Security has sent nearly 2,000 Latino children to mass detention centers, some of them as young as one and two years of age. Alex Nogales, President and CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) had the following to say:
"It is inhumane to rip children from their parents and hold them in what has been described by many as cement, wire cages. We condemn the actions of this administration for their callous and immoral disregard for our children and for using them as leverage to obtain their racist immigration objectives from Congress. Across the land, Latinos are undergoing our Trail of Tears and Japanese Internment Camps tragedy, and there is no doubt in my mind that future Americans will look back on these terrible times and wonder how present-day Americans allowed these inhumane actions and political maneuvering to take place. We call on all decent Americans to join us in standing up against these travesties, condemn the shameful actions of this administration, and take to the streets to demand an immediate stop to them."
