Washington, D.C. – As part of its ongoing “Year of the Latina” campaign, a groundbreaking effort to elect a record number of progressive Latinas this November, Latino Victory Fund today endorsed Brenda Lopez and Deborah Gonzalez for reelection to the Georgia House of Representatives. Lopez and Gonzalez are the first Latinas to ever serve in the Georgia General Assembly and two of only a handful of state legislators of Latino descent.
Lopez, an immigration attorney and former activist, is running to represent Georgia’s only Latino-majority district, House District 99. A working mom and lawyer, Gonzalez is running for reelection to House District 117. Last year, Gonzalez surprised Georgia’s political establishment by flipping HD117 in a special election and defeating a Republican candidate who had outraised her 4:1.
“Representatives Brenda Lopez and Deborah Gonzalez are prime examples of the qualified Latina leadership that has arisen in response to the election of President Trump,” said Daniel Castan, co-chair of Latino Victory Fund’s Georgia chapter. “These strong Latinas are fighting to ensure government works for all Georgia families, and Latino Victory is proud to support them in this effort.”
“It has been an honor to serve during my first term and now seek reelection and ask voters once more for their confidence to serve and represent our great state of Georgia to advocate for inclusive and progressive policies,” said Lopez. “I'm honored to be endorsed with a group of strong and smart American Latinas working to continue to make us a more perfect union.”
“I am both honored and proud to be a Latina political candidate who has the full support of the Latino Victory Fund with their endorsement,” said Gonzalez. “2018 is an incredible and promising year for Latinos in all aspects of our democratic process. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve all of my constituents, including members of the Latino community, as their State Representative in District 117.”
