Overview:The need for affordable housing in Houston is at an all-time high and a recent report shows the region ranks as the fifth worse metropolitan area in the nation for affordable housing shortages. Local leaders will gather on May 31 to celebrate the Houston Housing Authority’s first development in 10 years and voice the need for more affordable housing solutions in the city.

Independence Heights Apartments, a newly constructed, 154-unit multifamily housing development built by the Houston Housing Authority (HHA), is opening its doors to provide affordable housing options for mixed-income families, elderly, disabled and veteran citizens. Houston’s housing leaders and elected officials will gather for an open house ceremony to celebrate the complex, which is HHA’s first development in ten years. Among those expected to attend and make special remarks are Mayor Sylvester Turner and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

The event is happening Thursday, May 31, 2018, at 3:00 p.m. at 302 Crosstimbers Street, Houston, Texas 77018, (Southeast corner of Crosstimbers and North Main Street).

Houston is ranked as the fifth most severe metropolitan area currently offers 19 affordable rental units for every 100 low-income households, according to a report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition. HHA’s first new development in more than ten years offers a safe and affordable living environment to help advance stability and economic self-sufficiency for residents earning 60 percent or less than the area median income.

The Houston Housing Authority provides affordable homes and services to more than 58,000 low-income Houstonians, including over 17,000 families housed through the Housing Choice Voucher Program and another 5,700 living in 25 public housing and tax credit developments around the city. HHA also administers one of the nation’s largest voucher program exclusively serving homeless veterans. More information about the Houston Housing Authority can be found at www.housingforhouston.com.
