Wickenburg Mayor Everett Sickles last week refused to sign a proclamation recognizing the 30th Annual Fiesta de Septiembre and National Hispanic Heritage Month, saying the statement did not represent all area residents. Proclamations are formal public statements used by governing bodies to recognize events or individuals. In his almost two years as mayor, Sickles has acknowledged by proclamation Arbor Day, Gold Rush Days, First Responders Appreciation Day, Drinking Water Week and National Public Works Week. When faced with the option of signing the proclamation during the Town Council meeting, Sickles read the seven-paragraph document aloud. After reading the proclamation, Sickles laid it aside and said, “I have a problem with this.” Following the council meeting, Vice Mayor Royce Kardinal signed the proclamation recognizing the 30th Annual Fiesta de Septiembre and National Hispanic Heritage Month.
