Houston, TX, June 8, 2019, - Many years ago, alumnae chapters of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, realized the importance of the prestige, good will, and the cooperation of women who for various reasons were not members of any Greek-letter organization.
On June 10, 1949, The Sigma Comrade of Gamma Sigma Chapter was organized. Under the leadership of some of the officers of the Gamma Sigma Chapter. Soror Lorene Lancelin, Syntakte, Soror Merle K. Davis, Basileus, Soror Maudest Stewart, and Soror Ernestine P. Smith. These Sorors deserve the credit for the wonderful idea that led to the successful years that have followed the Philos.
In 1951 Soror Maudest Stewart, Basileus of the Gamma Sigma Chapter, changed the Houston Comrade name to Gamma Sigma Philos, she learned that the Greek term Philo meant Friend. Thus in 1954 Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated, officially approved the name change and accepted “PHILO” as the official name for the affiliated group.
Today, Gamma Sigma Philos are still very active within the community, providing scholarships and upholding all of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority’s values and motto “Great Service, Greater Progress”. The Philo affiliates continue to Serve, Support and stand in Sisterhood.
On June 8, 2019, The Gamma Sigma Philo Affiliate will be celebrating 70 years of active service, friendship and support.
