HOUSTON, TX – April 18, 2019 – Houston City Council Member Amanda Edwards empowers a crowd of over 500 Houston women through the community event, “An Evening of Women’s Empowerment” on Thursday, May 2 from 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the Houston Chronicle, 4747 Southwest Freeway, Houston, TX 77027.

This free event, which is in partnership with the Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce, The Houston Chapter of The Links Inc. and WatchHerWork, will be an unforgettable evening of panel discussions and empowering talks from some of Houston’s trailblazing and inspirational women including: Suzan Deison (founder of the Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce), Germaine Tanner (Harris County judge), Samina Farid (investor with Farid Enterprises), Donna Cole (CEO of Cole Chemical), Jade Simmons (speaker and internationally acclaimed concert pianist), Denise Hamilton (founder of WatchHerWork) Robin Paoli (founder of the Houston Women’s March) and Gabriella Rodriguez (student from KIPP academy).

“By sharing the stories of women who have successfully broken barriers and glass ceilings, we are planting seeds of inspiration in the women in the audience that they can do the same,” states Council Member Amanda Edwards. “My vision for this event is that every woman in attendance regardless of their age, race, education or profession, leaves with a greater sense of inspiration that they can dream their boldest dream and overcome anything to accomplish it.”

The first hour of the event (5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.) will be dedicated to highlighting Houston’s restaurant scene by featuring food from local female executive chefs and restaurant owners. Participants include: Chef Erin Smith of Fege’s BBQ, Chef Jane Wild of The Kitchen at The Dunlavy, Chef Sylvia Casares of Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen, Chef Yolanda Henry of Nuksy’s Catering, Bonita Edwards of Nita Cakes and Jasmine Chida of Sweet Cup Gelato.

An Evening of Women’s Empowerment is the first event of 2019 of Council Member Edwards’ Community Empowerment Signature Series (the “Signature Series”). Council Member Edwards’ Community Empowerment Signature Series empowers Houston teens, adults, and seniors by presenting tailored programming that (1) educates attendees on current issues impacting Houston; (2) equips attendees with effective methods and tools for action; (3) empowers attendees to take the initiative and create positive change in their places of influence; and (4) encourages attendees to work together peacefully to find resolutions. With the theme, “Be The Solution,” each program provides a forum that encourage, equips, educates and empowers Houstonians to “be the solution” in their respective communities.
