HOUSTON (August 19, 2019) — The Adult Congenital Heart Association (ACHA), the only non-profit organization in the country dedicated solely to the unique social, educational and medical needs of the 1.4 million adults in the U.S. with congenital heart defects, is hosting its Houston Regional Conference Saturday, August 24.
Held in partnership with Texas Children’s Hospital, UT Physicians, and Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center, the conference at the United Way Community Resource Center will feature detailed presentations from experts in the field on specialized lifelong care for adults with congenital heart disease (CHD), including transitioning from pediatric to adult care; mental health; family planning and pregnancy; heart surgery; and much more.
During the Family and Caregiver Support breakout session, attendees will hear from legendary Texas A&M coach R.C. Slocum and his daughter-in-law Theresa, who will share their experiences with John Harvey Slocum, their son and husband with CHD.
“I am looking forward to sharing my experiences at Texas Children’s over the past 42+ years as a parent with a child with a congenital heart defect,” said Slocum.
Held nationwide, ACHA’s regional conferences aim to provide adult CHD patients and their family members with a better understanding of the disease. Attendees will receive the educational tools necessary to make informed decisions, seek lifelong care from CHD experts, and learn how to advocate for their CHD needs, health and wellness.
“Our regional conferences are all about helping patients, providing education and social connections that empower them to take control of their CHD,” said Mark Roeder, President and CEO of ACHA.
Patients, family members, and friends interested in attending the Houston Regional Conference may register online here. Pre-registration is $25 per person, and registration at the door is $50. For more information about this and other events in Houston, visit www.achaheart.org/events.
