When they were young, Mary Kathleen Preston and her sister listen to stories of their mother Ella. They preferred these stories to fairy tales at bedtime. These stories make her remember a generation of pioneers who gave up so much to move to America and make homes for their family and future generations. The book tells the journey of the Bews family as they travel from their homeland of Scotland to the shores of America in the late 1890s, the turn of the century and early 1900s. Moving multiple times to find just the right home in the Dover district near Mt. Hood in Oregon.

“During the hardest years of my life after my son was killed in an accident, and my husband had a heart attack, I was able to cling to these stories and remember the better times in my childhood on my grandfather’s farm,” Preston says. “They meant so much to me that I told them to my grandchildren who loved them as much as I did.”

“Ella's Stories” serves as a remembrance of what life used to be like on the dairy farm in the early 1900s. It was written for young, beginning readers who want to know more about the history of America and especially Oregon State.
