Houston Ebony Opera Guild announces its Annual African American Music Gala, a concert featuring SON OF MAN, composer Hall Johnson’s cantata based on African American Spirituals. Roland Carter will conduct the chorus. With Bishop Robert E. Hayes, Jr. as narrator, the performance will take place at 4 p.m., Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Westbury United Methodist Church, 5200 Willow-bend Boulevard, Houston, Texas 77096. The Houston Ebony Opera Guild Chorus announces its Twentieth-eighth consecutive African American Music Gala, an annual concert celebrating the works of Black composers. This year’s program will feature SON OF MAN, composer Hall Johnson’s acclaimed but rarely performed cantata based on African American Spirituals. Conducting the chorus will be Roland Carter, a leading American choral conductor, composer and recognized authority on African American music traditions.
The narrator for the cantata will be Bishop Robert E. Hayes, Jr., a Houston native and retired bishop in the United Methodist Church, who remains active internationally as a religious leader and highly acclaimed speaker.
The African American Music Gala will be held at Westbury United Methodist Church, 5200 Willowbend Boulevard, Houston Texas 77096. Concert tickets may be secured in advance at houstonebonymusic.org. or by calling 713-335-3800. The price range includes the following options:
