Ever since Sylvester Turner has been mayor of the city of Houston he has strived to have one official Martin Luther King, Jr. Day parade. Mayor Turner has announced that the city will officially throw its support in partnership with the Black Heritage Society to hold one parade in honor of King. For years dueling parades hosted by the Black Heritage Society and the MLK Grand Parade have occurred to honor the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. but the mayor said it was time for the city to “just stand and put its official seal behind one.” This is especially important this year as a tribute to the late Ovide Duncantell, founder of the Black Heritage Society, that died in 2018. Congressman John Lewis and Astros outfielder George Springer will serve as parade grand marshals at the parade scheduled on January 21 at 10am.
